Ingredients
For the Bagel Dough:
- 4 cups bread flour (or all-purpose flour)
- 1 ½ tsp salt
- 2 ¼ tsp instant yeast (1 packet)
- 1 ½ cups warm water
- 1 tbsp sugar
For the Spinach Artichoke Filling:
- 1 cup fresh spinach, finely chopped
- 1 cup artichoke hearts, drained and diced
- ½ cup cream cheese (regular or vegan)
- 2 tbsp Parmesan cheese (optional)
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
Optional Toppings:
- Sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or grated cheese
Instructions
Prepare the Dough:
- In a large bowl, mix the flour, salt, and sugar. Add the instant yeast.
- Gradually pour in the warm water and knead the dough until it becomes smooth and elastic (about 8–10 minutes).
- Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm spot for 1–1.5 hours, or until it doubles in size.
Prepare the Filling:
- Heat a skillet over medium heat and sauté the spinach until wilted.
- In a bowl, combine the cooked spinach, diced artichokes, cream cheese, Parmesan (if using), garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
Shape and Fill the Bagels:
- Divide the dough into 8 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball.
- Flatten each ball into a disc, add 1–2 tbsp of the filling in the center, and seal the edges tightly. Shape into bagels.
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and bring a large pot of water to a boil.
Boil and Bake the Bagels:
- Boil the bagels for 1–2 minutes on each side, then remove and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Sprinkle optional toppings on the bagels.
- Bake for 20–25 minutes or until golden brown. Let them cool slightly before serving.
Notes
Storage: Store bagels in an airtight container for up to 3 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.
Customizations: Substitute cream cheese with vegan alternatives for a plant-based version. Add sun-dried tomatoes or shredded cheese for extra flavor.
Boiling Tip: Adding a tablespoon of honey or baking soda to the boiling water enhances the bagels’ texture and color.
