Description

Apple dumplings are a delightful dessert featuring whole apples wrapped in buttery pastry, baked in a spiced caramel sauce until golden and tender. Whether enjoyed warm with ice cream or drizzled with extra syrup, this recipe is a must-try for fall and holiday gatherings!

Ingredients

Scale

For the Dumplings:

4 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)

1 package (or homemade) pie dough

¼ cup brown sugar

1 tsp cinnamon

¼ tsp nutmeg

2 tbsp butter (cut into small pieces)

1 egg (for egg wash)

For the Syrup:

1 cup brown sugar

1 cup water or apple cider

½ tsp cinnamon

2 tbsp butter

1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Apples

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Peel and core the apples, keeping them whole.

Mix brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg, then fill each apple’s center with the mixture. Add a small piece of butter inside each apple.

Step 2: Wrap the Apples

Roll out the pastry dough and cut it into four squares.

Place an apple in the center of each square and wrap the dough around it, sealing the edges.

Brush with egg wash for a golden crust.

Step 3: Make the Syrup

In a saucepan, combine brown sugar, water (or cider), butter, and cinnamon.

Bring to a boil, then simmer for 5 minutes.

Stir in vanilla extract and pour the syrup over the dumplings in a baking dish.

Step 4: Bake

Bake for 40-45 minutes, until golden brown and bubbly.

Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Use tart apples like Granny Smith for the best flavor balance.
Seal the dough tightly to prevent filling leakage.
Brush with egg wash for a beautifully golden crust.
Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or caramel drizzle for extra indulgence.
